The pilot of a hot air balloon that crashed in New Zealand, killing 11, is likely to have smoked cannabis shortly before the flight, investigators say.

Elephant deaths lead to probe

The discovery of the remains of three endangered Asian elephants in Mondulkiri’s Phnom Penh Prich Wildlife Sanctuary has prompted conservation group World Wildlife Fund to launch an investigation into the animals’ deaths.
Samrang Dy Vichet, director of the Wildlife Sanctuary, told the Post yesterday that villagers spotted the decaying carcasses on Sunday, leading patrol teams and WWF officers to begin their investigation on Monday.

Researcher Identifies New Potential Target for Malaria Control

Scientists have discovered a way to interfere with the female malaria mosquito's ability to produce eggs.  The findings could lead to another method for controlling the spread of the parasitic illness, which, according to U.S. government statistics, claimed nearly 660 thousand lives in 2010, most of them children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Mosquitoes that carry malaris are becoming increasingly resistant to the insecticides in treated bed nets, so finding another method of control is becoming more urgent.

It is well known that the female insects require one or two blood meals from humans before they can produce eggs.  But now scientists have discovered another way the female insects develop mature eggs, one which could potentially be used for malaria control.

42 passengers from crashed Lao Airlines flight identified

 

Forty-two passengers have been identified from Lao Airlines flight QV301 which crashed on Oct. 16 killing all 49 on board, Somkiet Vorralath, deputy director of Champassak Provincial Health told Xinhua on Monday.
According to Vorralath, officials are waiting for DNA samples from Thailand and Australia in order to aid the identification process. Seven of the passengers are still unidentified including three French, two Lao people and two Australians.

Chinese movie romances the province

The makers of a $1 million Chinese film about a love story set in Siem Reap, which created a buzz at the Shanghai International Film Festival, have asked the Cambodian government for permission to show the movie in Cambodian cinemas.
The film, The Smile of Angkor, described as a “sense of heart movie,” (i.e. a love story) is directed by Liang Ming and stars Zou Jun Bai and Fang Hui.It was developed by Shanghai Film Technical Plant Ltd and presented by the Shanghai Construction Group in conjunction with the Shanghai HaiXiang Culture Media, Shanghai Film Group Corporation, and the Communication University of China.

US envoy calls for party talks

Peaceful and constructive dialogue will enable the ruling and opposition parties to “overcome the current impasse”, US ambassador to Cambodia William Todd has said.
In a frank column in local media on Sunday, linked to from the US embassy in Phnom Penh’s website, Todd said the political climate was “unprecedented” and the stage set for leaders to act in the interest of voters.

Apple's profit concerns linger

Narrowing profit margins continue to take a bite out of Apple.

The company on Monday reported quarterly sales and profit that handily beat Wall Street estimates, but the stock fell as investors focused on crunched earnings.

The problem: Consumers are increasingly interested in a mix of older and less-expensive Apple products, and that weighs on profits.
Apple's gross profit margin fell to 37% in its fiscal fourth quarter, down from 40% in the same period last year. Margins have fallen on an annual basis for seven straight quarters.

For the current quarter, Apple said it expects a gross margin of between 36.5% and 37.5% -- well below the median estimate of 38.6% that analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had expected.

Sex education a ‘big challenge’

Cambodians don’t like to talk about sex – or at least that’s what NGOs sometimes find when broaching cultural taboos and gender barriers to teach sexual and reproductive health.
“It is often surprising for [the students], because they have not seen these kinds of pictures before, and they are shy and don’t feel comfortable with the topic,” said Neat Thirith, who trains peer-to-peer sexual health educators at the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED).
In the book Thirith uses to train both females and males in a sort of crash course on sexual health, the condom on the banana stunt is foregone for explicit pictures of sexually transmitted disease symptoms, both genders’ reproductive anatomy and different forms of contraceptives and how to use them.

Kingdom’s first zombie film finding success at the theatre

Zombies have finally arrived to Cambodia, thanks to a local filmmaker on a shoe-string budget. Run, which the director said is the Kingdom’s first zombie flick, features all the hallmarks of the genre in the style of 28 Days Later or The Walking Dead. Rather than London or Atlanta, however, it is the Cambodian capital’s turn to be overrun with a zombie virus.
“We wanted to make Phnom Penh an apocalypse,” director Touch Oudom, who made the film on a budget of $10,000, said. He added that filmmakers wanted to steer away from ghost stories, which dominate the Cambodian film industry.

Japan auto parts firm seeks plant in PPSEZ

Auto parts manufacturer Denso Cambodia, which has rented space in the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ) since July, will expand operations by building its own factory, according to a company representative.
Administrative manager Seng Chanthy said yesterday that the factory will cover 10 hectares and require $10 million in investment before it is slated to begin work in 2015.
“Since we started operations [in July], we have been able to produce products with acceptable quality to send to Denso in Thailand,” he said. “With the new factory [we will be able to] gradually produce other products.”

NGOs see gap in rights record

A group of NGOs condemned rampant abuses of sexual and reproductive health rights in Cambodia last week, just days before the government submitted a human rights progress report to the United Nations.
The Cambodian Center for Human Rights, in cooperation with the Asia Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS and the Sexual Right Initiative, made public on Thursday a joint statement sent to the United Nations Periodic Review as an addendum to the human rights record submitted by the government yesterday.
Cambodia was last part of the periodic review process, which analyses the human rights records of UN member states every four years, in 2009.
